Spanish-language newspapers

La Nacion

This award-winning Spanish language newspaper is the leading newspaper for so-called serious people. It's strength is that publication is seven days a week and there are extensive packages, including a number of supplements. The online version is posted daily at midnight and updated with developing news during the day. Read it here.

Al Dia

This is a more popular version of the daily news also published by Grupo Nacion GN S.A. The newspaper was designed to compete with the wildly popular Diaro Extra.

El Diario Extra

If you like photos of dead bodies and naked women, this is the newspaper for you. Actually, La Extra, as it is called, also puts out a fairly decent news product. The owner, Sociedad Periodistica Extra Ltda., also owns La Prensa Libre, Channel 42 and Radio America.

La Prensa Libre

This is the dean of Costas Rican newspapers in that it is the oldest continuing publication. It also has the cheapest cover price, now 100 colons, about 20 U.S. cents. The news is quality, although advertising is limited. The paper is part of the group headed by El Diario Extra.

El Financiero

This is the weekly business publication put out by Grupo Nacion, the closest publication Costa Rica has to The Wall Street journal.
